The Geeks came to Colorado to visit us.
They were on route to Oregon, and detoured out of their way to come spend a little time with their old Kayuba and RVing buddies. We were tickled, especially knowing how quickly they need to travel from event to event.
We talked about going hiking on Saturday, and they left the choice up to us. We decided on Walker Ranch since the last time we hiked this park it had snow and ice on the trail. It would’ve been a 7-mile loop trail if we did the whole thing, or we could just do an out and back. Our plan was to leave it open and decide during the hike how far to go…since they weren’t used to hiking at elevation, and I was in my 30th week of the pregnancy – who knows who would call it quits first?
Unfortunately, this is the only picture of Walker Ranch I can offer you…
A broken down train blocked our access to the trailhead – which was only about 100 yards past the tracks. Darn! The good news was that a lady waiting in line to reach the Gros Dam Reservoir said that if we just wanted to go hiking, we should go to Golden Gate Canyon. She gave us directions on how to reach the state park from where we were. It was a great recommendation.
Since we were accessing Golden Gate Canyon State Park from the northern section, we chose a loop trail near Aspen Meadow Campground. We did the 3 mile Snowshoe Hare trail.
This trail had a nice variety. It offered rocks…
Aspens…(reminder: would probably be a great Fall Color Viewing spot!)
and wildflowers galore…
Here’s Andy and I and baby, too…
There were lots of fishermen (of all ages) enjoying Dude’s Fishing Hole with it’s scenic backdrops.
Can you tell these two are geeks? I call this photo “Geeks in the Wild”…ha!
They kept trying to tell us that we didn’t need to worry about getting lost since they had GPS on their Droids. We tried to explain to them that cell service and internet access is not reliable in the mountains. That’s why we still love paper maps! We’ll usually carry our phones with us in case of an emergency, but we turn ours off to save battery life when we’re out of range. I love that they keep trying to keep us informed about new technology since we won’t generally go looking for it like they do. We learn so much from these two.
On our drive home, we got to go past Panorama Point to show off the Continental Divide.
Our last detour of the day was a stop at Golden City Brewery – our favorite backyard brewery.
