Kingsport, TN - Bays Mountain Park

We've been wanting to make it over to Bays Mountain Park for awhile now.  You can see this mountain from most places around Kingsport.  It has a very distinctive look to it, making it easy to pick out on the skyline.  Our original plan was to check out the visitor center then hit the trails.  Instead, we took the barge ride on the lake and watched the movie in the planetarium.  A nice afternoon.  We would've still liked to have hit the bike/hike trails, but the park closes at 5pm!

Here's a view from our barge - there were several beaver lodges and dams that were pointed out to us.

I have to note, they take the term 'barge' literally.  It was a metal platform put on pontoons with plastic chairs.  But it was a peaceful ride and the ranger was very informative.  She (and her coworker) initiated a wolf howl....and the pack of wolves in the Nature Center responded.  It was one of those moments that just vibrates in your chest...the sounds were both intense and surreal.

The movie in the newly renovated planetarium was shown on the domed ceiling giving you the sense you were watching an IMAX movie.

We're looking forward to going back and hitting the trails.  We want to hike up to the fire tower for the views.
