Golden, CO – Lookout Mountain

Today we just played tourists.  A quick scenic drive up Lookout Mountain, which is part of the Lariat Loop Scenic Byway.   We hit some of the tourist spots along the way, too.

I did this drive in 2005 when we were staying in Golden.  I remembered loving this view from a parking lot in Windy Saddle Park (another JeffCo Open Space we haven’t explored by foot yet).

Lookout Mountain Road is popular with bicyclists taking on the challenge of the climb, and the thrill of the downhill.  I just couldn’t believe they were out on a day like today.  It was in the low 40’s, probably lower towards the top, and windy.  One biker was in shorts, too!  We’re thinking we’re too soft for Colorado…

Our first stop was to see Buffalo Bill’s Grave, which is at the top of Lookout Mountain…

Then we went to Lookout Mountain Nature Center.  There are trails at the Nature Center and a trail from Golden to the Nature Center.  But, honestly?  We were cold and content just to do the touristy stuff and scenic drive.

We headed south on Lookout Mountain Road to see if the Bison were out at Genesee Park (exit #254).  They were, but on the east side of I-70.  The herd has a tunnel that goes under I-70 so they can travel back and forth.

So Andy drove west only to do a u-turn so I could get to the overlook on that side of the road.  A worthwhile detour!  Unfortunately the sun was directly behind the herd, so I couldn’t get any good pictures except this one.
