Golden, CO – Centennial Cone Park

It was a beautiful day.  I was frustrated sitting at my computer.  What more of an excuse do I need to hop into my car and head into the hills?  If you can’t get something done well, you need to back away from it and do something that’ll adjust the attitude.  And that’s what I did.

Andy was out of town – he made a quick trip to Chicago to be with his mom and sister – so this was another solo hike.  I called him to let him know what I was doing, what trail I was hiking, and when I expected to be off trail.  I’m such a responsible person…when I don’t forget.

About 9 miles up Golden Gate Canyon Road is Centennial Cone.  I picked it because I hadn’t been there before.  Tough qualifications, I know.  The trail I was going to take was closed to Elk calving.  When someone tells me that, I *really* want to hike it then!  But I was good, and went the opposite trail (Travois Trail) to leave the elks in peace.

I ended up hiking with this other hiker, Joel, and it was quite nice having a hiking partner.  I knew I needed to be in nature, but I didn’t realize that I hadn’t wanted to be alone until we were chatting up a storm.  He also imparted some tips on tackling the 14ers (which is on my Bucket List now that I’m in Colorado).

I ended up hiking further than anticipated, but it was worth it.  We found a set of mule deer antlers on the hike, too.  First time I ever found antlers on a trail.  I took one, Joel took the other.

This should be a good park to mountain bike in as well.  They alternate weekends for hikers and bikers.  Some technical spots, but most of it looked good and without a great deal of elevation change.
