We arrived here in Wheat Ridge approximately one month after a bad hail storm. The RV Park manager warned us on the phone when we made reservations that they were still recovering. Neighbors told us stories after we arrived. The damage from the hail was still evident – RVs had dimpled sides and dimpled roofs, awnings were pocked with holes, vents and skylights were shattered or duct taped, windows were broken and boarded up. Even the park office had lost their windows. An RV had a tree fall on top of it. Several RVs and several cars were considered “totaled”. At least no one was injured.
The storm had hit around 10pm, when it was dark and people were heading for bed. There was no warning. It only lasted for 10-15 minutes, but left 4” of hail on the ground. Glad I wasn’t here in my RV – it must’ve been terrifying.
But not all of the damage could’ve been from hail…
Lots and lots of trees were split, sheared in half, or yanked clear out of the ground. Not just in the RV park, but all along the Clear Creek Trail and down the street.
This house is just a block away – so far the worst casualty we’ve seen.
It is believed that an unreported tornado came through the area. Possibly one that never actually touched the ground, but came close.
As I said, I’m glad we weren’t here for that storm.
