Topeka, KS - Brown v. Board of Education

The Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site is located in the old Monroe School - the school where the suit was filed.

It was another beautiful center with lots of video screens and a movie theatre that had multiple screens hung from the ceiling.  Very modern and high-tech.  And good information and informative rangers, too.

It was interesting to be reminded (or to learn?), that of the five states included in this case, Kansas had the least to gain.  Actually they had more to lose.  The Kansas schools, although segregated, were considered equal or even above the white schools.  They had a beautiful school (see the pic above), great teachers, they had books, and everything they needed.  Andy and I started to question what we had learned in school and to what detail - but, of course, we wouldn't have heard about this history from Kansas' perspective.

The Monroe School was just four blocks south of the Capitol, and another unexpected find in Topeka.
