Before leaving Oakley, we were treated to two special sightings.
One, was the sunrise - we got to see the sun come over the horizon before it slipped into the clouds above.
And the other surprise was to have a Nighthawk land on our picnic table and stay with us for a half hour or so.
These remain one of my favorite birds - they are elegant in flight with their long, narrow wings; their feathers are downy soft (I know from hand-feeding them at the Wildlife Care Center); and it amazes me to see their tiny beaks open into cavernous mouths.
